You see, as Roy was finishing the restoration of his Shelby Mustang, he was diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease).
Doctors gave him three to five years to make the most of a life that, over time, would become more and more difficult.
The engine also received a Comp Cams camshaft kit that included a higher performance cam with compatible lifters and valvesprings.
The heads received a valve job that included hardened exhaust seats.
For the ’68 model year the AMX was available with a 290-, 343-, or 390ci V-8.
Roy Mytinger had those dreams, along with a passion for muscle cars, particularly Mustangs. His search led him to a ’67 GT notchback sedan with a 390, four-speed, and air conditioning. The ’67 Shelby Mustangs were more refined than the previous Shelbys.
Roy bought the Shelby in 2001 and finally got his chance to drive the beautifully restored fastback when it was finished in 2004. He started looking for a nicely restored AMX several years ago and finally found one in San Diego.
He bought the car in April 2011 from Steve Fox, who had commissioned Thomas Benvie, a well-known AMC historian, to do the restoration.
The interior was also in excellent condition and features the Mustang’s deluxe upholstery with brushed aluminum panels on the doors and a matching dash panel. 500 Mustangs Shelby made, and all of the parts were there to finish the car.
The dash was restored to mint condition, while steering is handled by a perfect Shelby wood-rimmed wheel. Ford’s marketing surveys found that most people wanted a comfortable performance Mustang, so many changes made the ’67 Shelbys more appealing to more buyers.
